If you’re a “wanna be” world traveler, move Egypt to the TOP of your list! Culturally enlightening, historically humbling, and religiously inspiring, a journey through Egypt is spiritual and emotional.
Immediately upon disembarking in Cairo, I was met by Travel Plus, Egypt’s premier Destination Management Company. Tamir whisked me quickly through visa and passport control to a waiting black car service. It took approximately 30 minutes to travel from the airport to the Four Seasons First Residence in downtown Cairo. It was a great opportunity to begin to get to know Tamir who, over the next eight days, I would learn was a magician! (Really! He’d literally appear out of nowhere to pick my jaw off the ground!) The Four Seasons was a welcome respite after my exhaustingly long 22+ hour flight and my room overlooked the Nile! Yes, the Nile! The first of many-to-come emotional highs!
A bustling city of 22 million, Cairo is filled with noise, cars, people, color, trash, abandoned high rises and the iconic Great Pyramids and Sphinx. Muslims, Christians, and Jews co-mingle harmoniously and all are delighted to welcome tourists, especially Americans! We spent our first day visiting the Cairo Museum where the youngest item dates to 2500 B.C., the stunning treasures of King Tut are housed, (alas, no pictures allowed) and the real live mummy of King Ramses II lays. (pardon the pun) Following the museum, we visited the Great Pyramids.
Did you know the oldest and largest, the Great Pyramid of Cheops as it’s best known, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was built for a little known pharaoh? And, of course, we paid homage to the colossal Great Sphinx, standing guard over the pyramids for over 4,500 years. Finally, we visited the Solar Boat Museum which houses the monolithic boat of King Cheops built for his afterlife voyages. How they ever built and buried the thing is as much as mystery to me as how they built the pyramids! Rebecca
