We didn't think there was enough to hold our attention in Dublin for 3 days. We were wrong!
We drove from the Dingle Peninsula on the western coast of Ireland to Dublin. It was mostly interstate quality highways and finally some sunshine. Based on our experience so far I would say it's worth it to splurge in a city as large as Dublin and get at least a 4-star hotel. Big cities are not always the best places to save money on hotels.
We visited a very local pub where the best musicians in Ireland gather nightly for jam sessions: O'Donaghue's. A definite must!! It was crowded and hot, but clearly the place to be on a Saturday night. Note: They have music every night. The musicians sit in a circle and if you're more than 3 feet away from them you cannot hear them at all. We made our way to stand beside them, and it was so worth it! We hummed and tapped for quite a while and were reluctant to leave. The musicians clearly love what they're doing - and it's all free. We did buy one drink while we were there but that was not required. The music was enough of a high!
Walking around Dublin, you get the impression it's a young person's city: average age 30. We found everyone cheerful and friendly and helpful and we purchased more sweaters and scarves than we'll ever need! They were too beautiful and well-priced not buy!
Trinity College's Book of Kells is amazing!! The magnificently illustrated gospels were created in the first millennium, burned twice around 1000 AD, then produced again by monks. They're well preserved in The Old Library which is not to be missed.
The concierge at the Fitzwilliam Hotel sent us to a French restaurant, La Mere Zou, which was one of the best meals ever. It was a great way to end our adventure in Ireland. ND .jpg)
*I highly recommend the Fitzwilliam Hotel in Dublin. It’s perfect for corporate or leisure clients. Great location, service, accommodations and good value.
