Day three was a bit of a wash out. It was rainy and cold in Cannes. I had meetings until 2 and then worked email. Since I was 6 hours ahead of the United States, I was able to catch up with very pricy $30 a day internet access. Ouch. Maybe I was doing something wrong but service was about like dial up with a bad spark plug wire.
Day four included lots of walking! I flew from Nice to Madrid to meet my oldest child, Richard. After four days of traveling alone, it was a great sight to see him at the Metro station in Madrid’s Bajaras Airport. My first impression of Madrid was the airport and it was clean and easy to navigate for a non Spanish speaker. This impression held true for my entire stay. Madrid is known for its Madridisimo and it is well deserved. At the recommendation of our land operator in Madrid, we stayed at the Hotel Villa Real (Hotel Veeya Ree AL)in the heart of the Madrid Centro. Sweet stay!!!!! Reasonably priced and very nice. The folks were helpful and it was right in the thick of activity without being too overwhelming.
Day five included a lesson for tourists! We learned a bit about the Tourist Card and Double-decker bus pass. Contact me when you want to go and I will share the learning. We did use the Tourist Bus. It's a double-decker but with a high temperature around 40 degrees, we did not want to sit outside. We visited the stadium home of Real Madrid Futbol Club known as Estado Santiago Bernabeu and truly enjoyed it! Lots of neat things, but one find was a pizza place just off the Plaza de Canalejas on Calle de la Cruz. Pizzeria El Trebol has 8 seats and the owner, who speaks very little English, made a
tasty pizza!
The Palace of Juan Carlos, a do-over. The Prado art museum, a do-over and the Reina of Sofia Modern Art Museum... NOT a do-over! Madrid is the perfect walk-able European city!
