Do you remember the familiar… “Calgon, take me away” commercial? The thought of being able to rest, away from the hustle and bustle is so appealing. Fast forward several years… Now I hear… “I just need to get away!” Can you REALLY get away, no matter how far you roam? You absolutely can, but don’t be surprised if you bump into a familiar face! Has THIS ever happened to you?
Years ago, our family was in London getting ready to climb the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. “Mom! There’s Kelly!” Kelly was a friend from home and we climbed to the top with her family.
One morning last fall, Ricky and I took a Platypus Tour of Sonoma County, California. Four couples were on the van and as we introduced ourselves, we discovered that another couple was also from Winston-Salem and live just around the corner.
A tweet from our son studying in Spain…. In a Dublin Pub: "Excuse me, Are you from Winston, did you go to Reynolds and did you sing in Psalm 100?" Yes, Yes...and Yes.
Another son in the Barcelona Airport… “Standing in the line to check-in to my flight home, a couple walked up behind me. I recognized them from Chapel Hill. I had coached their son last year at the Chapel Hill YMCA for a basketball league. We chatted throughout the day in Barcelona, New York and Raleigh."
Waiting to take a tour of the Rubicon Estate in Napa, California… “Excuse me; were you two on a cruise in Southern France last summer?” We had been on the Windsurf together and even shared a breakfast.
So, you want to get away from it all? Go ahead! But remember, it really IS a small world!
