Life has been good to me this summer; I have had two golden opportunities for traveling to the South Carolina coast. On my first trip I got to explore the amazing city of Charleston (see my June 2nd post). The second time around we stayed 30 minutes away at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. It had been 15 years since I had visited Kiawah and let me tell you- a lot has changed!
The resort is still home to an array of wildlife (including the gators!). We stayed in a beautiful villa with two bedrooms and a screened in porch overlooking a creek. A 10 minute walk gets us to the ocean or to an amazing pool. You get what you pay for in the villas, the premier and deluxe units being the most recently upgraded. The resort villas are older and not furnished quite as nicely, but are also less expensive. The island is quite large, but I don’t think location is much of an issue because bikes are available to rent and the resort offers complimentary on island transportation so getting around is easy no matter where you stay.
Having our own kitchen has been wonderful since we are traveling with a 15 month old, but the restaurants on the island have a wide range of offerings for dinner out. One evening we ventured to Jasmine Porch, inside the Sanctuary Hotel. First of all, the hotel is breathtaking. Located on the ocean with the most amazing gardens and views, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic getaway. Secondly, the food and service at Jasmine Porch rivals any of the best restaurants in Charleston. Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report named it the “Best Down Home Cookery” and if you can stand the heat you should request a seat on the patio. The views of the gardens and the Atlantic Ocean (see picture to the right) are to die for. The restaurant is also known for their Sunday Jazz Bruch, not to be missed if you are here over a weekend.
