Two of my favorite people in the world joined me on my latest adventure! We flew from London to Dublin and rented a car. The Hertz car was very inexpensive (E200+ for a week) and we upgraded for not much more from a mid-size to a LandRover. Driving from Dublin to Kilkenny, we were astonished at the top interstate quality of brand new roads not even on our GPS.
Stopping in Kilkenny on our way to Cork for the night, we were happy to fall into very large, very inexpensive rooms at the charming Butler House. Right in the center of the old city within spitting difference of the must-see castle, Butler House is very old and very charming. Note: There is no elevator, but the staff gladly carried our bags. Dinner at the nearby Zuni Restaurant was world class and very reasonable. Listed as having Irish Continental cuisine, we were amazed to have local foie gras with delicious local breads as well as duck entrée with mashed turnips better than any mashed potatoes I’ve ever had.
Ireland is as charming in winter as in other times of the year and so reasonable. Put it on your list of must-do’s! ND
